Part of This Complete and Nutritious Breakfast

Categories: Uncategorized Jun 18, 2014

When I was a kid, I loved cereal. Well, I loved any cereal that was advertised on TV and was represented by a cartoon character. But hey, Barney was right, Fruity Pebbles were worth stealing. Anyway, at the end of those commercials there was always a scene of a table with the bowl of cereal, a glass of orange juice, a slice of toast, and maybe an apple. Then you were hear the words, "Part of this complete and nutritious breakfast."

Even as a kid, I remember thinking, "Who eats all of that?" All I ever ate was the cereal - 2 to 3 bowls of it! I don't eat those cartoon cereals anymore, though I probably wouldn't mind it. I still remember how they taste - they were good. I don't eat them now cause I know they are not good for me. Well, at least that is what I believe. My "knowledge" is what keeps me from eating something I would otherwise probably enjoy. But that, is a topic for another blog altogether...

As a kid, I ate cereal everyday, sometimes multiple times a day. It was part of my "complete" and "nutritious" breakfast, and lunch, and dinner. Like I said, it was part. The other part consisted of playing and moving. I played all the time, until I went to school. But after school, I was released like a wild cat - I ran around until it was time for bed. When I was older, I "played" organized sports, almost year round.

The point is, I grew up eating sugar coated, delicious tasting, cartoon endorsed cereal and it was part of my "nutritious" life. The other part, the part that made the cereal perhaps even a good food choice, is that I moved and played all of the time. I didn't sit still. I didn't not do anything. I was always involved in some type of movement / game / sport / "exercise".

Many of us concern ourselves with eating the "right" foods, in the right portions, in the right times, in the right amounts and so on. What would happen if we concerned ourselves with getting the "real" nutrition that we need, and we moved around throughout the day like we were created to move? What would happen if you had a 10 minute floor-time session for breakfast, or a 20 minute walk for lunch, and maybe a 30 minute game of toss with you kids for dinner?

What would happen if we sprinkled in the good nutrition of movement throughout our days and focused on that instead of focusing on what we eat with total disregard to how we move? I'll bet Golden Grahams could still be a part of our "nutritious breakfast" if we actually fed on movement, too.

I'm not telling you to go eat 3 bowls of Sugar Smacks (remember those?). I am telling you to grab a big bowl of hide-n-seek or a glass of spiderman crawls and nourish yourself so you can enjoy all the good things life has to offer.

Movement, It's GGGGGGRRREEEEAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTT!!
